An Dun Broch, Dounie (Carn Liath)

An extremely well fortified position on a rocky promontory between the River Carron and the Allt Dounie was the site for this broch, with what would most likely have been two ramparts with ditches defending the site across the neck of the rocky outcrop. What remains now is a heavily overgrown depression within a grassy mound with no structural details visible.

There is a footpath along the banks of the beautiful River Carron, and it might be worth your while taking the time to enjoy the walk while getting to the broch. The only alternative is to find parking on the single track road (which isn't easy and will most likely consist of finding a stretch of grassy verge a good distance from the Allt Dounie) and then scrambling down the banks of a rocky gorge to the broch. If you take this route, be prepared from some difficult and dangerous scrambling through thick undergrowth.
